A personal trainer has shared her horrific ordeal with a very common exercise that has snapped her hip. In the pursuit of tight buns, she was relegated to crutches for months.

The barbell hip thrusts 24-year-old Kristina Schmidt was attempting to practice are a favorite of people hoping to build their glutes. The barbell is placed across the hips and, with a thrusting motion, pushed up and off the floor. It's a fantastic muscle builder for the lower body, but it snapped Schmidt's hip.

She had already been incorporating it into her regular routine and was seeing results. Her muscles were building quickly, so she decided to up the weight. Progress is key to building muscle in the gym, but it has to be done with caution. It is easy to sustain an injury with overwork.

Kristina upped the weight to a huge 140kg. However, it turned out this was too much for her bone, and snaps her hip as a result. Two months after the exercise, she felt agonizing pain and found she had a huge fracture.

Long Road To Recovery After Gym Goes Snaps Hip

From the rapid overload of weights, Schmidt had caused stress fractures across her snapped hip. The weight was too much too fast. Her MRI scan showed the damage she had caused. She noted that "the space between my hip bone and femur shrank so much that my bones were grinding on each other."

Hip surgery is never an easy process, and the recovery varies drastically depending on the snap. Consequently, Kristina was going to have to undergo surgery to repair the damage. She was given an ORIF or open reduction and internal fixation surgery to repair the bone.

This replaces certain damaged parts and reinforces them with pins and plates. However, the situation became dire when the repairs to her snapped hip became infected. The wounds resulting from the surgery led to sepsis, and she had to undergo further surgery and a course of antibiotics.

Since the incident, she has been trying to raise awareness for gym safety. Slow burn damage like this can be life-changing. It's always best to learn your limits and ask a professional if you're unsure about something.
