Per Reuters, the exact nature of the crash has been marred by mixed reports. Initially, firefighters reported that the bus had a tire blowout, causing the bus to lose control and strike the truck. However, witness statements allege that a granite block being carried by the truck came loose, causing the collision.
Ultimately, the investigation will determine the cause of the lethal crash that has left dozens dead.
The bus was carrying 45 individuals. After colliding with the truck, the bus careened off to the side of the road, where it then set on fire. Responding personnel in Teófilo Otoni, Minas Gerais, cleared the rubble and sorted through the crash.
They confirmed 38 dead, including the driver. 13 more were taken to a local hospital, their condition critical. A car had also collided with the truck, where they became stuck underneath it. There were three occupants, and they each survived.
It is unknown why, but the truck driver fled the scene according to witnesses. It's possible they believed themselves guilty of the horrific incident or ran out of panic. There is nothing to suggest that they have been pursued, or if the authorities want them found.
