Bus Collision On Tourist Street Leaves 53 Injured, 4 In Critical Condition

Two buses in Barcelona, Spain, crashed into each other, injuring at least 53 injured, with four of them currently in critical condition. The crash took place on a busy tourist street, with the two buses carrying students and cruise ship passengers, respectively.

According to The Mirror, one of the coach buses hit the other one from behind at Avinguida Diagonal, close to the Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, a well-known landmark in Barcelona. As a result of the impact, the bus carrying cruise ship passengers then hit a tree and a lamp post.

The other bus was carrying Italian students who were visiting the Spanish city located in Catalonia. These students were coming from another Spanish city, Lloret de Mar. A spokesperson for Autocares Julià, which operates one of the coaches, confirmed that German, British, and Italian tourists were among the injured.

"They were on a cruise liner which had arrived in Barcelona earlier today and was due to leave in the next few hours," the spokesperson told The Mirror. "I don't know whether there are any British tourists among the most seriously hurt. It is too early to say at this stage."

Photos of the accident showed approximately 20 ambulances at the scene, along with fire engines and police cars, as per the outlet.

Injured Treated

A spokesman for an emergency response coordination center confirmed that the victims in critical condition were transported to local hospitals. These included Hospital Clínic, Sant Pau Hospital, and Hospital del Mar, according to Catalan News. Additionally, a seriously injured child was transported to Sant Joan de Déu Children's Hospital.

"Some 34 people have needed medical attention following an accident between two buses on Avinguida Diagonal. Four of them are in a critical condition," the spokesman said. "The fourth critically injured person is trapped and is being freed now. Nineteen ambulances were mobilized."
