Using her popular "Dumb Blonde" podcast via Daily Mail, Bunnie Xo, whose real name is Alyssa DeFord, revealed the dangers of weight loss medicine. The celeb explained that she was taking a non-FDA-approved drug called retatrutide. It caused a nasty side effect that sent her spiraling into a severe depression.
The drug is currently in late-stage clinical trials. So the FDA hasn't approved it yet.
"I literally got sent into the worst suicidal depression that I've had since 2020," she explained during the January 11 episode. "It scared me so bad. I didn't think I was going to make it through the two weeks. Like I was praying to God."
Bunnie XO Speaks Out
According to Bunnie Xo, she didn't feel like she could handle anything.
"It was either overstimulating or it was to the point where it just stole my joy. I had no joy, like nothing to live for. It was so dark," the podcaster said. At the time of the episode, she had been 20 days off the drug. She said the side effects were finally clearing. "There are so many people who are taking reta and love it and all that. But something happened with me."
However, drug manufacturer Eli Lilly released a statement after the podcaster went public about her symptoms. The company denied Bunnie Xo being a part of the current clinical trials. They claimed that retatrutide was only available to those in the trials.
"No one should consider taking anything claiming to be retatrutide outside of a Lilly-sponsored clinical trial," the spokesperson said. "This was not a Lilly product, and the company continues to warn the public about the potential dangers of fake medicines."
So perhaps the podcaster didn't get the real medicine. Whatever the case, it's a good thing that she is now recovering, and the severe depression has started to fade. But as someone who has battled depression before, it's a marathon, not a sprint.
