On May 29, a helicopter crashed in Georgia, killing Dave Fiji and severely injuring his wife, Jesni. They had boarded the helicopter after their wedding reception. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the groom died in the resulting crash after takeoff.

"I saved recipes I thought he would like, I spent a significant amount of time daydreaming about our future and making all kinds of plans for us to do together and with our families," Jesni said at the funeral. "I was looking forward to cooking for him, washing his clothes, packing his meals, and taking care of him the way he took care of everybody else."

The bride is heartbroken after the death.

"I felt safe in his love," she added. "I knew that I could trust him to always have my best interests at heart."

Pilot Nikhil Nargundkar also died in the resulting crash as well. The bride and groom had known each other for more than a decade before their wedding. It was a perfect wedding, but the couple decided to leave the venue by helicopter to fly to a nearby airport. However, the weather was foggy.

"She said when she woke up, she was under the rubble," Dave's father George said. "She woke up. And saw him lying on her chest. She herself is a nurse. When she touched him, she called out to him. He was already cold."

Jesni survived with injuries, but nothing could be done for her husband. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown.

"NTSB is continuing to document the accident scene with the assistance of the Dawson County Sheriff's Office and the FAA," the NTSB said in a statement to PEOPLE. "Initial impact signatures show that the helicopter struck tall trees, followed by an impact with terrain in a heavily wooded area. There was no post-impact fire."
