The incident began when a Nassau County judge ordered Ferrufino-Rodriguez, 18, to be held without bail in connection with the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jefferson Mancia-Fernandez. Shortly after the judge's ruling, a young man, believed to be a relative of the suspect, began shouting at Ferrufino-Rodriguez, urging him to "hold your head up!" Authorities said the spectator's actions led to an escalating situation and the brawl.
Court officers quickly intervened, but the confrontation turned violent. Six officers reportedly pinned the man to the ground. They then dragged him from the court room and charged him with contempt, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest.
The altercation came as Ferrufino-Rodriguez faced charges for the shooting death of Mancia-Fernandez. According to Nassau County officials, Ferrufino-Rodriguez shot Mancia-Fernandez at a busy Hempstead intersection Saturday afternoon. The shooting was part of an ongoing dispute between the two men, authorities said, via the New York Post.
Brawl Result of Targeted Attack
Mancia-Fernandez had been helping his mother move between apartments when Ferrufino-Rodriguez allegedly pulled up in a car and shot him in broad daylight, per multiple news outlets.
According to the Post: "The slay victim, Mancia-Fernandez, had been helping his mom move between apartments when Ferrufino-Rodriguez allegedly pulled up in a car and killed him, Newsday reported."
Nassau County homicide squad commanding officer Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick described the brawl inside the courtroom as a targeted attack.
"These two individuals knew each other," Fitzpatrick said. "Apparently, there's some friction between them from the neighborhood, and on that particular day, they ended up in the same location at the same time."
The shooting and the subsequent courtroom melee have drawn significant attention, highlighting both the violence in the area and the tensions surrounding the case. The courtroom incident served as a reminder of the emotional volatility often surrounding high-profile criminal cases, especially those involving violent crimes.
