Set to be included on Brandy Clark’s upcoming album Big Day in a Small Town is the song “Three Kids No Husband,” a track that showcases the harsh reality of being a single mother. Clark co-wrote the touching tune with Lori McKenna, who first recorded the song for her 2014 album Numbered Doors.
Clark released an acoustic version of the song to YouTube that just features her accompanying herself on guitar. The song spotlights many of the struggles that single mothers often face on a daily basis like trying to cook dinner, keep multiple children happy and pay the bills without the help of a husband. The lyrics reveal mothers as the hardworking heroes that they truly are.
“She’s a mom and a dad and a taxi driver, when the baby is sick she’s an up all-nighter, a hand and a shoulder and a referee, a real life hero if you ask me,” Brandy sings. The somber lyrics and skeletal instrumentation are goosebump-inducing to say the least. Watch her performance below.
Clark’s songwriting successes include The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two,” Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” and Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow.” Her new project, a highly-anticipated followup to her 2014 Grammy-nominated album 12 Stories, will release on June 10th.
