Pitt, 62, made the candid admission during a new interview with Esquire, published on Monday.
The wide-ranging conversation took place at the actor's $12 million home in Los Angeles, where Pitt reflected on his relationship with alcohol and some of the most difficult periods of his personal life.
Brad Pitt Reveals He Ended Seven Years of Sobriety
Pitt initially stopped drinking following an alleged incident aboard a private plane in 2016.
"I was sober for seven years. And then I got back off the wagon," he confessed in the interview. "In a more restrained manner. I got overconfident a couple times, went, Yep, nope, not good for me. Not in big quantities."
Pitt reportedly laughed while making the admission before explaining that he can now have "a few" glasses of wine.
However, the actor stressed that he "can't have a lot" and has "to be professional about it".
The 2016 plane incident came shortly before the breakdown of Pitt's marriage to Angelina Jolie and the beginning of a lengthy, highly publicized separation.
While reflecting on that difficult period, Pitt revealed that he experienced suicidal thoughts.
Brad Pitt Reflects on Difficult Period
Jolie, 51, previously alleged in court documents that Pitt physically harmed her and one of their children during the 2016 incident.
The former couple share six children: Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 18.
"The pain was so oppressive that — I wasn't going to act on this, but I could feel — I could feel the cold steel of the bullet in my head, and it felt like relief," Pitt added.
Pitt and Jolie legally separated in 2019 before reaching a divorce settlement last year.
The Fight Club star has previously spoken openly about giving up alcohol. In 2019, he revealed that he had become sober and attended a 12-step recovery program.
"I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privilege," he previously said.
"I was trying anything and everything, anything anyone threw at me. ... It was a difficult time. I needed rebooting."
Pitt has remained busy professionally in recent years, earning 10 production credits in 2025 alone, including F1, in which he starred as Sonny Hayes.
He is also set to return to the big screen in the upcoming 2026 movies Heart of the Beat and The Adventures of Cliff Booth.
