We're Crying Watching This Wedding Couple Sing + Dance to Brad Paisley's 'Then'

It seems like there's a Brad Paisley song for everything. Whether you want to jam out during a drive, unwind with a beer fishing out on the water, or get in a good cry, there's a Paisley song for that. The country star is also incredibly good at love songs, as evidenced by his hit ballad, "Then." It's almost best that the music video of this song was just footage from the 2009 CMT Music Awards so that listeners were able to use their imagination on how to make the romantic song personal for them.

The hit song, co-written by Paisley and songwriters Ashley Gorley and Chris DuBois, is one of Paisley's four country songs that are double platinum (others being "She's Everything", "Whiskey Lullaby", and "Remind Me".) DuBois explained to The Boot how the song came about and that it was all inspired by a desire to write a love song.

"Brad and I talked prior to him starting the creative process for [album American Saturday Night]. He felt pretty strongly that he wanted to come out with a love song — a ballad — which was kind of a change of pace for him. So, I went to my buddy Ashley, [who] is a great piano ballad writer."

With Gorley on board, the trio decided on the concept of I thought I loved you then and really wanted to write something that would speak to the leading ladies in their lives.

"Our goal was to write a song that wasn't necessarily for songwriter acclaim. It was really just something we could play for our wives that would touch them. Our wives are not in the music business. If we could make our wives cry, we figured we could reach the general public. That's really what matters when it comes right down to it.

We took a long time on that song. We probably got together six or seven times and got it to where we all felt good about it. When we finally got to the last day we worked on it, there were a couple buddies of ours that were over at Brad's house working on a different song, and we called them in and played it for them. They just flipped out. I think we knew then that it was right, that it was done. And then we went home and played it for our wives, and they freaked out, so we felt pretty good about it!'

It seems like they were onto something because "Then" was a No. 1 hit on the country music Billboard charts. The narrator's reflections on the little moments throughout a couple's relationship continue to resonate with listeners. It's no wonder it has become a popular wedding song. When we saw the above video of the couple singing an intimate duet of "Then" while enjoying their first dance at their wedding, we got more than a little emotion. He didn't even have to be at the actual wedding for it to feel like Paisley personalized the song for this couple. You almost feel like he wrote this song just for their special day and it's giving us all the feels.

Play "Then" while you watch this couple's first dance and try not to cry. If you're anything like me you'll immediately tear up as the bride twirls around the dance floor.

"Then" Lyrics

I remember, trying not to stare, the night that I first met you
You had me mesmerized
And three weeks later, in the front porch light
Taking forty-five minutes to kiss goodnight
I hadn't told you yet
But I thought I loved you then
And now you're my whole life
Now you're my whole world
I just can't believe the way I feel about you, girl
Like a river meets the sea,
Stronger than it's ever been.
We've come so far since that day
And I thought I loved you then
And I remember, taking you back to right where I first met you,
You were so surprised
There were people around, but I didn't care
I got down on one knee right there and once again,
I thought I loved you then
But now you're my whole life
Now you're my whole world
I just can't believe, the way I feel about you, girl
Like a river meets the sea,
Stronger than it's ever been.
We've come so far since that day
And I thought I loved you then
And I can just see you, with a baby on the way
And I can just see you, when your hair is turning gray
What I can't see is how I'm ever gonna love you more
But I've said that before
And now you're my whole life
Now you're my whole world
I just can't believe the way I feel about you, girl
We'll look back someday, at this moment that we're in
And I'll look at you and say
And I thought I loved you then
And I thought I loved you then
