This user on Reddit had to ask that age-old question: Am I the A**hole? after she scratched off a $50,000 card. Once she had uncovered the winning combination, and figured out what her lotto winnings were, her boyfriend started to try to take his share.
The couple had only been together for two years and weren't married and didn't live together. They're also only 27, so, relatively young. All this being said, the boyfriend decided that he was entitled to a share of her lucky card. He started talking about paying off his debts and letting her pay for a European trip among other things.
Clearly, her lotto winnings belonged to her boyfriend more than her. I can see why he's in debt if he thinks $50,000 is going to stretch that far. However, she stood up for herself and put him straight quickly enough. "When I told him I planned to save most of it for myself — maybe invest or use it to pay off some of my student loans — he got upset and said I was being selfish." She continued, "He said that couples share everything and that it was our win, not just mine because he's supported me through a lot."
Now, I ain't saying he's a gold digger, but...
Reddit Supports Girlfriend's Attitude To Boyfriend Over Lotto Winnings
Understandably, the internet supported her in her decision. It was her stroke of luck, she bought the card, and she had scratched it. The lotto winnings belonged to her, fair and square, and her boyfriend could take a hike.
"You actually won twice!!! First the $50k, then an even greater value. Insight into who you are dating. Get away from him now." one commenter said. In the face of a considerable wedge of money, she had seen a new side to her boyfriend. His greed and selfishness had emerged.
As another commenter pointed out, "Remember—sharing a Netflix password is one thing, but sharing a lottery win with someone who jokes about spending it for you? hard pass!!" And there we have some wise words. Always look after yourself before you look after others, especially if they're already financially irresponsible. I think she's probably going to keep the lotto winnings for herself and lose a rather selfish boyfriend.
