The Delta Sweete, which honored Gentry's Mississippi Delta roots, was released the year after Gentry rose to fame with her iconic Southern Gothic story song "Ode to Billie Joe." The song spent four weeks at No. 1 and earned Gentry a Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

The singer-songwriter followed The Delta Sweete with 1968's Local Gentry and a duet album with Glen Campbell. In the following years, she released 1969's Touch 'Em With Love, 1970's Fancy, featuring the timeless story song later recorded by Reba McEntire, and 1971's Patchwork.

Born Roberta Lee Streeter in 1944 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, Gentry would also go on to host her own BBC TV show in London.

Gentry walked away from fame in the 1980s. Though she hasn't performed publicly for decades, Gentry's stunning songs and voice have continued to influence artists such as Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams and Shelby Lynne.
