According to a police report obtained by PEOPLE, Gardaí (Ireland's national police and security service) were alerted to the discovery of "partial human remains" in Darndale, Dublin, on Friday afternoon. The body part was a hand, that is believed to have been dropped by a bird flying over the school.
The body part has been "removed for examination and DNA analysis, which will assist Gardaí in confirming the identity and determine the course of the investigation."
RTE reported that CCTV footage showed the hand being dropped around 10:30 am. It was discovered around 2 hours later. Thankfully, no children were at the school, Our Lady Immaculate, as the school was on midterm break.
Despite a portion of a kid's hand being dropped onto a schoolyard, there is no indication of anything sinister at this stage of the investigation. Until authorities conduct tests and identify the hand, the case will remain unsuspicious.
The Hand Could Belong To A Child Who Was Involved In An Accident The Night Before
Disturbingly, the appearance of the hand comes the day after a violent accident involving a 12-year-old kid.
The Irish Independent reported that the hand is believed to belong to a child who was injured after a gas canister exploded.
The child lost a portion of his hand in a nitrous oxide explosion on Thursday night in the same area. Although no connection has been confirmed, it's a creepy coincidence. The kid is currently in hospital receiving treatment.
If the DNA tests match the kid to the hand, then the case will be promptly closed, I imagine.
RTE further reported that detectives are also checking the missings person register. It is also hypothesized that the hand could have been picked up by seabirds from the coast.
The case is still open and ongoing. There are many avenues that the investigation could go in. Either way, I'm glad that the school was on break. I can't imagine the panic and fear if there were schoolchildren present.
