The famed comedian recently sat down for an interview with CBS Sunday Morning correspondent Tracy Smith. To promote 860 -- his forthcoming one-man act that is set to debut on Broadway later this month.
Crystal Says He No Longer Trusts God
Crystal has experienced a lot of loss over the past few months. In December 2025, his good friends, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner, were found murdered in their Brentwood, Los Angeles Home. Less than a month later, in January 2026, the Palisades wildfires swept through Los Angeles. Crystal and his family were among those who had their homes torched as a result.
With all of the tragedy that Crystal has experienced over the past year, the Smith asked the comedian if he had been talking to God over the past years. After he recalled his prayer conversations in his 2004 play 700 Sundays. Crystal responded by saying that his relationship with God is not as strong as it used to be.
"No, 'cause I don't trust him," Crystal responded(via the Los Angeles Times). "Too many bad things have happened. The Earth is in bad shape. This is a weird, scary time, so no. Not anymore."
Crystal's comments led to a lot of mixed reactions on social media.
"Show me where the Bible says bad things won't happen to good people, and get back to me," one user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"Shame on Billy Crystal. God did not kill Rob Reiner. His own son killed him. With regard to the home and the fires, I believe those fires were set. Stop blaming God for what humans do," a second user chimed in.
"There's literally a whole bible story about a guy who keeps trusting God even though bad things keep happening to him. I doubt Billy Crystal had any relationship with God in the first place," a third user remarked.
Crystal's new Broadway play opens next Thursday (October 21).
