'Bat Mitzvah': Adam Sandler Breaks Rotten Tomatoes Record With Film Starring His Wife and Daughters

Critics are raving about a standout performance from Sandler's daughter, Sunny.

After 34 years in the industry, Adam Sandler has a new best-reviewed film. The Netflix teen comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah has racked up an impressive 96% "fresh" rating from critics on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes.

Sandler's lengthy career has been famously marked by negative reviews — a fact he leans into with his 2018 Netflix standup comedy special Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh — but in recent years, the actor-comedian has seen a striking uptick in positive critical reception.

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah narrowly surpasses the ratings of Hustle from 2022 (93 percent), The Meyerowitz Stories from 2017 (92 percent), and Uncut Gems from 2019 (91 percent). It's important to note that Bat Mitzvah's score could go down later this week if negative reviews roll in.

Sandler has a relatively small acting role in the film, ceding center stage to his daughter, Sunny, who critics agree has a bright future in the industry. Sandler also produced the film, and his other daughter, Sadie, appears as a supporting character.

The critical consensus calls the film "a coming-of-age comedy that sidesteps simple nostalgia, You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah finds fresh humor in adolescent anxiety — and suggests a bright future for star Sunny Sandler."

The official description for the film, which is based on the young adult novel by Fiona Rosenbloom, reads: "Lifelong best friends Stacy (Sunny Sandler) and Lydia (Samantha Lorraine) have long dreamt of epic bat mitzvahs, but when popular boy Andy Goldfarb (Dylan Hoffman) and Hebrew school drama come between them, their perfect plans go comically awry."

The film marks the most recent addition to Sandler's ongoing $250 million Netflix agreement. The actor-comedian has overseen the creation of an impressive tally of eight productions for the streaming platform, spanning from the Western satire The Ridiculous Six (which, by the way, garnered a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes) to the dramedy Sandy Wexler.
