According to The Standard, Glass was visiting his brother's home in Hereford Close, Rednal, on August 19, 2024. The April 3 inquest revealed, as per the BBC, that Glass had volunteered to look after his brother's dogs. Upon arrival, however, it is believed that he was attacked by one or several of the dogs.
Glass sustained injuries in his arms, feet, and legs, reportedly caused by dog bites and their claws. It is believed that Nicholas Glass attempted to escape his brother's home through a back window. He sought refuge but was eventually found dead by authorities on August 21, 2024.
That very same day, West Midlands Police responded to reports of dogs running loose in the street. After searching Glass's brother's property, they found Nicholas Glass in the garden. As per the inquest, he was "reasonably well hidden" behind a fence panel. Police had previously found blood inside the house and near the window Glass reportedly used to escape the dog attack.
Dogs Seized
Four dogs were seized by West Midlands Police. Two of the dogs were XL bullies, a breed banned in England and Wales. Neither of them had a certificate of exemption. The other two were a bulldog and a Staffordshire bull terrier.
During the inquest, Assistant Coronor Adam Hodson claimed that it was not possible to determine which of the dogs had attacked Nicholas Glass. Hodson spoke with Glass's family, hypothesizing on what might have occurred to Nicholas back in 2024.
"I can only hypothesise on what happened," Hodson said, as per ITV News. "It is entirely possible he may have been attacked upon his return to the house, that he managed to leave the property via a window and called for help and that he managed to hide behind wooden panelling before succumbing to his injuries."
Hodson added that, while Glass was a "troubled individual," given his reported difficulties with mental health, there was no evidence of "suspicious or foul play."
"In my opinion it appears to be a terrible tragedy," Hodson added. "He was a caring brother and son who simply offered to look after his brother's dogs and lost his life as a terrible consequence."
