In the aftermath of his death, the band has decided not to move forward with its remaining scheduled performances this year, instead taking time away to mourn their friend and bandmate of nearly three decades.

Band Member Dies as Sixpence None the Richer Cancels Tour

Sixpence None the Richer announced the decision in an emotional statement shared on the band's Instagram page.

"We are completely heartbroken over the tragic and untimely loss of our bandmate, brother-in-arms, and friend for 30 years, Justin Cary," the statement read.

"The past three years had been full of international tours, recording new music and an even further deepening of the joy of making music together."

"We were looking forward to connecting with new and old fans around the world this summer and fall, but for now we need time to be still and grieve."

The band then confirmed the cancellation of its remaining shows.

"With heavy hearts, we are cancelling all remaining tour dates for 2026."

Sixpence None the Richer thanked Cary for three decades of memories while admitting that they do not yet know what the future holds.

For now, the group said they "must grieve our brother".

The statement concluded, saying "Prayers are welcome for us all, especially his beautiful wife, Linda. We love you all so much and will see you again."

Tributes Pour In for Bassist Justin Cary

Fans, friends and fellow musicians flooded the comments with tributes to Cary following the announcement.

"He was the best of the best," singer Stephen Wilson Jr. wrote. "You are an angel, birdy. He is and would be proud of you and Matt."

"Love and big heartfelt hugs to all of you," Jerry Dale McFadden wrote. "There was no one like him."

Sixpence None the Richer formed in New Braunfels, Texas, in 1992 before eventually settling in Nashville, Tennessee.

The band became widely known for songs including "Kiss Me" and "Breathe Your Name," alongside covers of "Don't Dream It's Over" and "There She Goes."

"Kiss Me" earned the group a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

Cary first joined Sixpence None the Richer in 1997 and remained with the group until its initial breakup in 2004.

He returned following the band's reunion in 2007 and remained an important part of the lineup in the years that followed.
