He said that he had a wake-up call after destroying his body with drugs and alcohol. Speaking with Living Proof Radio, he got candid about his struggles.
"I mean, looking back, if I had to do things differently, I probably wouldn't have gotten sh--faced for a f**king decade straight and cracked the same jokes at the same f**king Irish pub with the same people," Margera said.
Ultimately, he realized that he was losing time and abusing his body.
"I've realized how much time that I've lost," he said. "I knew that, like, I have destroyed my body from drugs and alcohol, and I don't even know if this is gonna come back."
Bam Margera Talks Getting Clean and Overcoming Addiction
Things got so bad that a convenience store worker suggested he slow down after noticing him buying vodka daily.
"I remember, he's like, 'Bam, you know a lot of people kill themselves this way whether they want to or not. ... This is how a lot of people go, and I do not want to see that with you,'" he recalled. But he didn't listen at the time. He essentially shrugged away the concern and continued down his path of self-destruction.
"I'm like, I gotta change," Margera told himself. But he couldn't stop his addiction. It wasn't until he hit medical rock bottom that things changed. He suffered five seizures in a row then woke up eight days later in the hospital.
He found he wasn't able to breathe on his own. That was essentially the last straw as far as geting sober and changing his life around. Since then, Margera has been working to rehab his life and overcome his addiction.
But he has recognized that his actions led to a strain between himself and old friends. Those bonds currently appear to remain broken.
