According to a report by the Boston Globe, MacDonald has admitted to the police that he intentionally beat his wife, Emma, "to death using his hands, feet, as well as a variety of other objects, and that it was his intent to kill her in doing so."

On Thursday, April 23, MacDonald pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and assault and battery on a police officer. The judge ruled that MacDonald should be held without bail.

"She granted a request by MacDonald's court-appointed lawyer, Jonah Goldsmith, to order an evaluation of MacDonald's competency to stand trial. Goldsmith did not respond to a request for comment," The Boston Globe reported.

Police arrived on the scene at roughly 7:40 pm on Wednesday. Upon arriving, a "violent struggle" reportedly ensued between the police and MacDonald. Following the incident, the University's hierarchy sent an email to staff, advising there was no threat to the campus.

"I want to acknowledge that this is heartbreaking and deeply unsettling news for our campus. Our thoughts are with those affected, including the families, friends, and colleagues of the individuals involved," Javier Reyes, the University chancellor, told Boston25 News. "I also recognize that the lack of complete information may add to the distress many are feeling, but this is necessary to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation."
