Iconic Rock Band Drops Controversial EP, Bizarrely Performs Tour Opener From Backstage

The unexpected project moves away from the band's signature guitar-driven sound in favor of electronic production and heavy use of autotune, leaving fans sharply divided online.

While some praised the group's willingness to experiment, others questioned the dramatic shift in direction from the California rockers.

Avenged Sevenfold Surprise Fans With Unusual Tour Opener

On July 25, Avenged Sevenfold kicked off their co-headlining tour with Good Charlotte at Thunder Ridge Nature Arena in Ridgedale, Missouri.

Before the main sets, the opening act was listed simply as "STATICA," the same name as the band's newly released EP.

Fans quickly speculated that STATICA was actually Avenged Sevenfold performing under a different name, with reports and fan-recorded footage appearing to support the theory.

Rather than taking the stage, members of the band seemingly performed songs from the EP backstage while the performance was broadcast to the audience on the venue's giant screens.

After Good Charlotte finished their set, Avenged Sevenfold took to the stage for their headline performance.

According to Setlist.fm, the band opened with "Nightmare" before playing a 12-song set that concluded with "Cosmic."

Fans Divided Over Experimental New EP

STATICA appears to be a side project, although the EP was released under the Avenged Sevenfold name despite being performed separately from the band's main set.

"I couldn't listen to it anymore I was like what in the actual f**k," one fan said on Instagram. "I still love them! but that's a no for me!"

Another fan added, "Was going to go see them live next month. And I think I'm going to pass because of this new drop."

Not everyone was critical of the release, with several fans praising the band's willingness to push creative boundaries.

One said, "New EP is [fire emoji]. Y'all just need to seriously broaden your horizons."

"It's an experimental EP; if they always did the same thing, they'd get criticized too," another said.

STATICA marks Avenged Sevenfold's first release since 2023's Life Is But A Dream...

In December 2025, the band also released the standalone single "Magic". The song served as a tie-in for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Season 1.
