Autistic Teen Has His Leg Amputated After Being Shot By Police

Police in Idaho reportedly shot an autistic teen nine times when they were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in Pocatello. The incident has gained public attention and condemnation, including protests outside the police station.

press release by the Pocatello Police Department, officers responded to an incident in the 700 Block of N. Harrison on April 5 at around 5:22 PM. There was reportedly a physical disturbance involving two males and a female. One of the males was apparently intoxicated and armed with a knife.

The press release explains that officers were 'involved in a shooting' with the armed suspect. Officers provided treatment at the scene, and Emergency Services transported him to Portneuf Medical Center.

An eyewitness

caught the incident on camera, and it sheds some light on what happened. A man is rolling around on the ground with what appears to be a knife in his hand. He waves it at a woman nearby, although what they are saying is unclear. Later, the woman seems to try and disarm the man with a stick.

The police arrive in multiple squad cars after a few moments. Four officers run toward the man, shouting, "Drop the knife" or "Get on the ground." He stands up and moves toward the officers, and they shoot at least nine times. It's unclear if he was holding the knife when he approached the police.

People Are Protesting Outside The Police Station After The Teen Shooting

Per a report by Idaho 6 News, protestors are rallying outside the Pocatello Police Station, condemning the shooting. The outlet explains that the man with the knife is a 17-year-old with autism and physical disabilities.

He is reportedly in critical condition, and his family says he had to have a leg amputated due to his injuries. Over two dozen people showed up to the protest outside the police building. Some have signs with them, including one that simply reads, 'Why were your guns drawn?'

Per the press release, the Police department says, "The East Idaho Critical Incident Task Force will be conducting the investigation into the incident. We respectfully ask for the public's patience as the investigation unfolds. Further details will be provided as they become available.
