The 89-year-old suffered the injuries while promoting her latest novel, Building 903, forcing her to cancel a scheduled appearance in Massachusetts.

Lowry, who has written more than 40 books, was due to join Diary of a Wimpy Kid creator Jeff Kinney for an event at An Unlikely Story bookstore in Plainville.

Author Visits ER After Bizarre Accident

Lowry took to social media to share a selfie showing significant bruising around her face and a large cut on her lip.

"This is my glamour shot this morning after a bizarre accident that sent me to the ER for six hours instead of to the wonderful event at An Unlikely Story which alas, had to be cancelled," she said.

The author explained that "an apparently malfunctioning revolving door was the culprit."

Hundreds of fans and fellow writers flooded the comments with messages of support and wishes for a speedy recovery.

"Feel better! We missed you last night!," one user said.

Another added, "Feel better. So sorry," alongside several heart emojis.

Other fans expressed their concern while finding some humor in the unusual circumstances, with several making playful references to Lowry's literary career.

"I'm so sorry, Lois! I thought that when you stepped into a revolving door it transported you into another dimension ... not a hospital," a user said.

"Tell me where that door is, I'll give it a good knockin'!," another added.

"Feel better soon! Revolving doors are always the antagonists in a plot line," another commented.

Lois Lowry, Best Known for 'The Giver'

Lowry has enjoyed a remarkable literary career, most notably through her acclaimed 1993 dystopian novel, The Giver.

The book earned her the prestigious Newbery Medal in 1994, four years after she received the same honor for Number the Stars.

Despite their popularity, several of Lowry's books have faced challenges and bans in schools and libraries.

The Giver, which features on reading lists in many schools, has also faced restrictions elsewhere.

The novel has reportedly sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and remains one of the most celebrated works of children's literature.

Lowry subsequently expanded the story's universe through three additional novels: Gathering Blue (2000), Messenger (2004) and Son (2012).

In 2014, director Philip Noyce brought The Giver to the big screen, with a cast featuring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Brenton Thwaites and Taylor Swift.

The film reportedly earned approximately $67 million worldwide against a $25 million production budget, with screenings across more than 3,000 theaters.
