After Jeff Baena, the screenwriter and filmmaker, was found dead at his home in Los Angeles, later to be confirmed a suicide by authorities, many were quick to share their condolences to Aubrey Plaza, his wife. Plaza, who skipped the Golden Globes given the tragic death of his husband, has now spoken about Baena for the first time since his death.

Aubrey Plaza and Baena's family shared a joint statement to several outlets, including Page Six and PEOPLE. "This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time," the statement reads.
On January 3, an assistant discovered Baena's body in his California house. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner revealed that he hanged himself. After calling 911, police investigations confirmed his cause of death to be a suicide after only outlets like TMZ reported on it when the news broke.
An outpour of love and sympathy toward Plaza and Baena's family flooded the actress' social media. Many users commented on her latest Instagram post, expressing their condolences and love for the Parks and Recreation star. Even The Brutalist director, Brady Corbet, who won the Best Director award at the 2025 Golden Globes, mentioned Plaza and Baena at the end of his acceptance speech.

Later in May 2021, she would post a picture on Instagram, revealing that the couple had, indeed, married. "I think that one of the great things about our careers is that we are forced to be independent, take little breaks, go off and do our things and come back," Baena told the outlet. "So it's kind of fun. Nothing is ever the same. You don't want to spend too much time a part. But I think that there's a way that it can work and there's a balance in that."
