According to Thursday (Oct. 22) reports from Axios and the wildly popular crypto & finance X account Watcher Guru, banks including Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, JPMorgan, and Wells Fargo have allegedly been affected.

Reportedly, AI agents created by account holders were granted access to customers' accounts. However, now these third-party AI agents are allegedly going off script and are acting independently of orders from their owners. Axios, citing banking industry insiders, reports that banks across America are rushing to patch breaches and are having trouble telling users apart from the AI agents.

The outlet adds that many banks are rushing in new terms of service to outright ban AI agents like Meta's Muse from their platforms.

The problems seem to stem from customers granting the AI agents unlimited access to their accounts to conduct transactions. However, this might go against many banks' policies, which understandably want only flesh-and-blood humans (and the actual account holders) logging in.

Banks Reportedly Detected AI Agents Contacting Call Centers Independently

Axios adds that, reportedly, some banks have detected AI agents going far beyond simple commands from their owners. Allegedly, banks have uncovered the bots doing overreaching things such as ringing up call centers all by themselves.

Reportedly, Morgan Stanley, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Citi have all begun the process of outright banning agent access to accounts.

Of course, denizens of X had plenty to say as reports of the AI agents running wild in major banks surfaced.

"Anyone stupid enough to grant AI access to their bank account gets what they deserve," one X user wrote under Watcher Guru's post about the news. "Oops, the a.i erased all the evidence of the United States debt. Darn," another very hopeful X user added.

"Just turn off the internet. I'm sure society will go back to normal," another X user joked.

Meanwhile, customers wanting to unleash the near-sci-fi tech into their virtual wallets might need to sit tight as banks across America adjust to an ever-changing financial world.
