According to ABC News, the incident took place on January 27 at approximately 9:30 am. Officials state that an American Airlines employee working at Charlotte Douglas International Airport was fatally struck by a vehicle on the tarmac.

The employee was reportedly working on an aircraft's apron or ramp when the airport ramp vehicle hit them. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the apron or ramp is "intended to accommodate aircraft for purposes of loading or unloading passengers or cargo, refueling, parking, or maintenance."

Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene, and the airport ramp car was the only vehicle involved. Per a report by CNN, police say that the American Airlines employee was pronounced dead at the scene.

American Airlines Have Released A Statement Regarding The Incident

Authorities have not revealed many details regarding the incident but have released a statement. When questioned by USA Today, a spokesperson said: "We are devastated by the accident involving a team member at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and our local team members. We are focused on ensuring that all involved have the support they need during this difficult time."

"Our deepest condolences go out to the employee's family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. The airport is working closely with airline and first responder partners in the ongoing investigation and is providing support as needed."

It seems like the aviation industry can't catch a break as of late. Just last week, a United Airlines flight suddenly descended mid-flight. The force was so severe that it threw food trays and objects all over the floor of the airline. The crowded flight reportedly had over 200 passengers. The incident, which prompted an emergency landing, also injured dozens of passengers and seven crew members.

While Airlines have made the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately, CNN notes that deaths of airport workers are quite uncommon. According to the outlet, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics recorded three deaths in 2022 and five in 2023.
