Love Trumps Hate in Sturgill Simpson's Video for 'All Around You'

On Sunday night, Sturgill Simpson took the Grammys primetime stage to perform "All Around You," a track off his Grammy-winning album, A Sailor's Guide to Earth. Fresh on the heels of the powerful performance, Simpson has released a video for the poignant song.

Simpson wrote A Sailor's Guide — which took home Best Country Album — as a letter to his young son. Each track offers wisdom, advice and experience on how to navigate life and its difficulties. "All Around You" gives the album's most direct and powerful message: love is eternal, and it will get you through anything and everything.

Directed by Matt Mahurin, the music video follows a young boy as he navigates unfamiliar and sometimes dangerous territory. Each scene in the surreal clip corresponds to the song's lyrics. Midway through his journey, the boy discovers a golden heart-shaped ring that later serves him as a compass.

At the video's climax, we see references that correspond to the troubling world situation. A man who looks like Donald Trump stands on a massive podium, blasting an aggressive message through loudspeakers. In a subsequent scene, we see immigrants approaching the border wall, and later tanks raging on a battlefield. The boy's heart ring overcomes all of these calamities. The message is clear: love will triumph.

Simpson will capitalize on the attention he earned from his Grammy award and primetime performance. He will embark on an expansive 2017 tour, beginning with a date at the Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival on March 4.
