On October 21, 2021, actor Alec Baldwin, 66, was rehearsing on the set of the Western film Rust in New Mexico. Then the unthinkable happened. While he was holding a supposedly harmless prop gun, it went off. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, was mortally wounded and director Joel Souza, now 51, was hurt. There was reportedly a live round in the gun, Questions have surrounded the shocking, deadly incident ever since. Now, per dailymail.co.uk, Baldwin is apparently suing the prosecutors who wanted to put him in jail for the lethal calamity.

According to the outlet, "The civil lawsuit for malicious prosecution and civil rights violations was filed Thursday at the state district court in Santa Fe...He [Baldwin] alleges defamation, and claims prosecutors and investigators intentionally mishandled evidence during their investigation into the shooting."
Per The Wrap via dailymail.co.uk, the lawsuit claims that the defendants "conspired to pursue a groundless indictment against Baldwin...." Those individuals named in the lawsuit reportedly include "Special Prosecutor Kari Morrissey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies and investigators from the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office...."

The District Attorney's announcement brought this strongly-worded response from the actor's attorneys, Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas. "Today's decision to dismiss the appeal is the final vindication of what Alec Baldwin and his attorneys have said from the beginning - this was an unspeakable tragedy but Alec Baldwin committed no crime." They added, "The rule of law remains intact in New Mexico."
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer threw out the case against Baldwin during his trial. That was because of "allegations that police and prosecutors withheld evidence from the defense."

Baldwin explained on the Fail Better podcast hosted by actor David Duchovny that after the case against him was dropped, his career picked up steam. He said via dailymail.co.uk, "I do believe that by the communications I've had lately, that things are coming back my way to work, and I'm happy for that because I've got seven kids."
