Alaska Mom Accused Of Leaving Toddler In Freezing Car While Attending Hot Date At Hotel

According to a statement issued by the State Troopers division of the Alaska Department of Public Safety, the incident happened on March 18. At around 8:42 p.m., the Fairbanks 911 Dispatch Center received a call that reported a child left alone in a vehicle. The vehicle was parked at a local hotel parking lot, located in Healy.

"The child was crying," the state troopers wrote. "The vehicle was off, with a window partly opened with outside temperatures at 6 degrees Fahrenheit."

As soon as they arrived, Tri-Valley EMS immediately responded by removing the 20-month-old child from the vehicle. They provided treatment for hypothermia and rushed the toddler to the EMS/Fire Department for further treatment. No parent or guardian was found at the time.

'Romantic Rendezvous'

Eventually, however, Lilian Johnson exited the vehicle and realized her daughter was nowhere to be found. At that time, the emergency services had already taken her daughter. An investigation in charge of the state troopers revealed that Johnson had left her child to engage in what they called a "romantic rendezvous."

Upon investigation, hotel security video showed that Lilian Johson had spent a total of 35 minutes inside the hotel. She arrived at 8:18 p.m. and eventually checked on her daughter, who was already transported by EMS, at 8:53 p.m.

Lilian Johnson was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child in the first degree.

This was not the only case of similar characteristics that took place on March 18. More than four thousand miles away, in New Jersey, Moshe Ehrlich, a 35-year-old father, allegedly left his four-month-old son inside his vehicle. Given the temperature, the four-month-old tragically became unresponsive. Medical staff declared him dead after being rushed to a local hospital.

Ehrlich was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, similar to Johnson's charge. Further investigation might end up with more charges being filed against Ehrlich.
