Sheri Mitchell-Clutts, 65, called 911 on Sunday and reportedly admitted she had shot her husband.
Authorities say Mitchell-Clutts claimed she felt threatened and bothered by him in the hours leading up to the shooting.
Alabama Woman Charged After Husband Found Dead in Recliner
When officers arrived at the home, they found Timothy Clutts, 69, dead in a recliner chair.
According to investigators, he suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Police arrested Sheri Mitchell-Clutts at the scene and charged her with domestic violence-related murder.
"Her demeanor seemed obviously upset from what little interaction I had with her at the scene, but you never know what's going through somebody's mind," Shannon Oliver, sheriff of Franklin County, said.
Investigators say Sheri told them Timothy had recently undergone open-heart surgery roughly two weeks earlier.
She also allegedly told dispatchers that she had felt threatened throughout the day.
Sheri says that her husband repeatedly entered the room where she was and irritated her.
Investigators Reviewing Couple's History as Case Continues
Authorities allege that after several encounters with her husband, Sheri retrieved a handgun and waited for him to enter the room again.
When he did not return, investigators say she went searching for him before allegedly finding him sitting in his recliner and firing a fatal shot into his chest.
"There's a number of cases where someone does something like this you're actually having to track them down and find them and build evidence based on the scene, and in this situation, she was pretty open," Oliver added.
"Which leads us to a bunch of questions like what was going on with her or him."
Officials say the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue reviewing the couple's background and relationship history.
Oliver said investigators are reviewing call logs dating back six years.
He added that "at this point, there's, that we can find, no domestic related calls there."
Mitchell-Clutts remains in custody at the Franklin County Jail without bond while awaiting an Aniah's Law hearing.
