According to a

statement issued by the West Coast Saldanha Bay Air Show, the incident took place on Friday, March 22. O'Connell was performing a routine that was supposed to display the capabilities of an Impala Mark 1. Thousands of spectators watched as O'Connell performed several maneuvers.

During most of the performance, the audience watched O'Connell being under total control of the aircraft. However, during one of the final maneuvers, the aircraft suffered a sudden loss of altitude. This resulted in it entering a "steep dive," with it crashing into the ground.

A video of O'Connell's final moments was shared by The Associated Press, showing the aircraft's sudden loss of altitude. The plane crashes against the ground, exploding in a giant fireball.

Airshow commentator, Brian Emmenis, shared a quote with the West Coast Saldanha Bay Air Show. Reportedly, Emmenis witnessed the fatal and tragic crash himself.

"He went into the dirty configuration, he rolled the aircraft - the dirty configuration is when the undercarriage is extended - he turned the aircraft, the undercarriage was up," Emmenis said. "On coming out of it, one could clearly see that he was losing height. He went out towards the hangars—he was at that stage in a serious deep dive—and he went straight into the ground. There was no sign of an attempt to eject."

Investigation

Following the crash, first responders arrived at the scene. James O'Connell was pronounced dead. The first responders managed to secure the area and confirmed that no attendees were injured as a result of the crash.

Currently, the incident is being investigated. The South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Air Show South Africa (ASSA) were "notified immediately" following the crash. "At this stage, no further details can be confirmed until the investigation is concluded," the statement reads.
