She Famously Reinvented Herself to Get a Role
The beloved actress was most well known for starring in the hit movie An Awfully Big Adventure. She famously reinvented her entire personality in order to nab the role.
She had originally auditioned for the role using her birth name, using her experience on 2point 4 Children as a springboard - but she was denied. Then, she decided to do something drastic.
She made the persona of a working-class girl from Liverpool, like Stella from the adapted book. She feigned an accent, and even dyed her hair red in order to land the role.
The director of the movie, Mike Newell, recalled that he was originally "angry". "She was very bushy-tailed, eager, romantic, soulful, tough, very much like the character. She even looked a bit like [the character]". But, she won him over when he realized it "was good for show business".
