"Not being able to see for 12 to 14 hours a day, like I couldn't see my phone, I couldn't read, I couldn't call," Leguizamo said. "My other eye wasn't clear either. I could not see, I had to be taken to the bathroom, and I had to be brought back. I had to be taken to eat."
Leguizamo then continued by explaining how he navigated the situation when he was alone.
"When I was alone I just had to be inside my head because that's all I had," he added. "Too much time with my own thoughts. It's a dangerous thing."
Of course, Leguizamo's eyesight is fine. However, his character, Eumaeus, struggled with his vision. Therefore, when in costume, Leguizamo found himself dealing with those same sight issues. Nevertheless, the role was played immaculately, and he's now reaping the rewards of his hard work. The Odyssey has been well received since being released earlier this month.
John Leguizamo Recalls His Favorite Moment While Filming 'The Odyssey'
During a recent conversation with PEOPLE, Leguizamo shared one of his favorite moments from filming The Odyssey. Leguizamo shared a moment between himself, Matt Damon and director Christopher Nolan.
"I was having a fever dream as my character, Eumaeus, and losing it because I'm kind of method, and [Nolan] saw that I was freezing because we're dressed in miniskirts and it was freezing in February," Leguizamo recalls. "He took off his coat and put it on me."
"And Matt Damon goes, 'I've been working for six months in the oceans, in Iceland, and you put the coat on him?!,' Leguizamo said. "Yeah, Matt's the funniest."
We often overlook the years of work that go into making hit movies. Actors spend significant time together, and even more time getting into character. It's these behind-the-scenes stories that often add to the lore of a movie. Of course, we only remember the lore when the movie is a genuine success, and that doesn't seem like it will be a problem for The Odyssey.
