Acting U.S. Attorney Found Dead in Office After Being Reported Missing

The attorney was reported missing to authorities shortly before he was found dead. His cause of death has been released.

Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Haden was found dead in his office in the Edward J. Schwartz federal building. As reported by People, he was found dead on August 19.

His body was found shortly after being reported missing. Police explained that no foul play has been suspected in his death.

Southern District U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon confirmed his death in a statement to local outlets. "This is one of the darkest days in our office's history, but there was nothing dark about Andrew Haden's life," he explained.

"He was a beacon of light," he continued. "Full of laughter, friendship, integrity, and unwavering commitment to serving our community. We will honor his life and legacy by carrying his light forward, today and always."

Following his passing, Gordon had held a building-wide meeting on Thursday, August 20. He also reportedly emailed all staff to inform them of the attorney's tragic passing. Gordon said he would not disclose further details out of "respect for his wife and children".

Andrew Haden was the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California at the time of his passing. He was also a Navy veteran and held a bachelor's degree in political science. He had worked in the Schwartz building since 2010.

Scott C. Carr, the executive director of the San Diego County Bar Association, said that "our legal community has lost a good one". He added that people were "devastated" by his passing, saying he was a supportive boss.

The Cause of Death of the Attorney Has Been Released

In an updated article posted by the New York Post, the cause of death of the acting U.S. attorney has been released.

It was confirmed by the outlet that the attorney tragically committed suicide. However, the official cause and manner of death have not been confirmed, pending a report from the medical examiners.

Haden had been reported missing prior to his passing. A client had contacted San Diego Police shortly before he was found dead to report his concerns that he may have been missing.
