"Absolutely Not a Prank": Outrage as Maine School Children Accidentally Served Dirt at Charity Dinner

A Maine high school's charity event was marred after children indavertantly ate potting soil they thought was a dessert dish.

Charity events are meant to be the pinnacle of heartwarming. People coming together to fundraise for those in need. But sometimes, things go wrong. Rarely like this, though.

A Maine high school inadvertantly served its kids potting soil. The ironic part is that it was at a charity dinner raising money to fight hunger, called the Empty Bowl Supper. As reported by the New York Post, the incident happened at Medomack Valley High School in Maine.

A science class had been experimenting with potting soil earlier in the day. They had baked the soil to determine the effect of sterlized soil on plant growth. Of course, baking the soil meant that it was present in the kitchen.

And that's where it stayed, up until the charity dinner. According to a statement from Linda Pease, the principal of Medomack Valley High School, "The soil had been placed in a baking dish covered with foil and set off to the side of the stove area, seperate from the Empty Bowl Supper food items."

Unfortunately, it seemed to have gotten mixed up with another dish, meaning it was served to students.

Students Mistook the Dirt For a Dessert

Have you ever seen those plant-pot desserts? They crush up Oreo cookies or something similar to give the appearance of dirt. Well, that must have been what the students assumed it was - either that, or some sort of chocolate dessert?

Either way, "three students briefly put some of the soil in their mouths, believing it to be a dessert item, before immediately realizing what it was." Of course, chocolate and dirt taste pretty different (not that I've tasted dirt!), so it was pretty obvious something had gone wrong.

The school had to stress that the situation was an accident. "This was... absolutely not a prank", they explained. It's a fair assumption to make.

They added, "Those involved in organizing the Empty Bowl Supper, a longstanding service event that means a great deal to our school and community, are deeply sorry that this occurred."

According to their website, the Empty Bowl Supper also leads raffles and silent auctions across the events they hold.
