Blake Shelton Says "A Guy with a Girl" Reminds Him of Gwen Stefani

Blake Shelton is one of the most charming dudes in country music. He doesn't take himself too seriously as anyone who watches NBC's The Voice can attest to, but he's also one of the most talented singers in the genre. While it seemed to shock the world when he went public with his romance with pop singer Gwen Stefani, he remained completely at ease, proving that sometimes perfect opposites attract. While not specifically written for Shelton or Stefani, the country singer's 2016 hit "A Guy with a Girl" seems to perfectly describe their relationship.

When the song was first written by songwriters Bryan Simpson and Ashley Gorley, they actually didn't have a specific artist in mind for the song. They were merely writing from their own experiences with their wives.

"When I enter into a room, she thinks everybody wants to talk to me," Simpson explained to Billboard. "And I'm like, 'No, no, no. The truth is when they take a look at you, I'm just a guy standing there with a girl. They want to know who you are. They're intrigued by you.' "

In less than three hours, the two writers had a completed song. At the time, Shelton was actually still married to his ex-wife Miranda Lambert. Simpson and Gorley started to think that the superstar would be a perfect fit for their new song.

"He is always in our heads, because he's one of the biggest people in the format," said Gorley, "but this was more about getting the lyrical idea correct. It had a melody that a few people could do, and it ended up sounding more and more like him as the song went on, but it definitely wasn't just a straight shot at Blake."

The country star was definitely intrigued by the song but decided to put it on hold, thinking it was too similar to his hit song "Honey Bee." But then he and Lambert got a divorce and he began a relationship with Gwen Stefani after meeting her on The Voice. Suddenly it seemed like the perfect time to bring the song out while working on his new album If I'm Honest.

"We were trying to wrap up the album at the beginning of the year, and all of a sudden, this song is a true story for me," Shelton explained.

Shelton recorded the song in Nashville with the help of producer Scott Hendricks and Stefani was actually present for the majority of the recording sessions. She loved the song and really enjoyed getting to see the differences in the ways country music is recorded vs pop. According to Hendricks, Shelton seemed to sing better in the recording sessions just having Stefani in the room (swoon). The song went on to hit number one on the country airplay charts and even five years later, can still regularly be heard on the radio.

" 'A Guy With a Girl' is my life right now," Shelton told Billboard in 2016. "Out on the farm or touring, [I'm] that guy, and then at the end of the day, when it's time to have a life and go to a party or something, I become the guy that's with Gwen. It's pretty cool."

"Everywhere we go, whether it's my hometown in Tishomingo [Okla.] or some fancy party in Hollywood, when she comes around, it's like people just stop," he added. "And I don't blame 'em."
