John Frieda's Career and Multimillion-Dollar Beauty Empire

Frieda grew up surrounded by the hairdressing industry, with his father operating a salon in West London and his grandfather working as a barber on Fleet Street.

Following in his family's footsteps, Frieda began his career as an assistant to renowned hairstylist Leonard Lewis at the famous House of Leonard salon.

His reputation quickly grew, leading to opportunities with major fashion publications, including British Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.

In 1976, Frieda opened his own salon in London, establishing the foundation for what would eventually become an international beauty empire.

As his popularity increased, he expanded his salon business overseas, opening locations in Barbados, Ibiza and Los Angeles.

During the 1990s, Frieda shifted his focus from hairstyling to developing his own range of hair care products.

The John Frieda brand subsequently became a major name in the beauty industry, with its products gaining international recognition.

In 2002, Frieda and business partner Gail Federici sold the company to Japanese conglomerate Kao for approximately $450 million.

Away from his professional achievements, Frieda was married to Scottish singer Lulu between 1977 and 1990.

The couple had one son, Jordan Frieda, who pursued a career in acting before becoming a food entrepreneur.

Frieda later married Avery Agnelli, the widow of Fiat heir Giovanni Agnelli, with whom he had two children and a stepdaughter.
