The first time I ever heard the song "Over You" was when contestant Cassadee Pope performed it on The Voice in 2012. It was a showstopper. She poured all the drama she could muster into it. Coach Blake Shelton, who co-wrote the melancholy track with his then-wife, Miranda Lambert, quietly sat spellbound as he watched her. She wowed everyone and won that season of the show. As for the song, it gained a little extra luster that evening. Regarding Lambert and Shelton's marriage, it ended in divorce in 2015. However, the highly-personal tearjerker they jointly penned still has significant emotional meaning for Lambert and likely for Shelton as well.

Lambert and Shelton Led Hectic Lives Back Then and Both Had Suffered Losses
The popular "Kerosene" singer talked about the song when she was on the podcast And the Writer Is... She shared, "It was one of those real conversations late at night on the bus. We also were both very busy touring musicians. Like, it was a lot. It's two people going separate ways constantly, so there wasn't a lot of time to write. Sometimes when you're off the road, you had four shows, you're like, 'The last thing I want to do is pick up my guitar right now. I need a minute.'"
Both stars experienced painful losses in their lives around that time. Blake Shelton's brother died in 1990 at 24. His dad, Dick, passed away in 2012. Miranda Lambert lost a treasured friend. So they were each thinking of bereavement and sad goodbyes. Not surprisingly, they collaborated on a song to vent and defuse their intense feelings.
She Clearly Recalls How They Worked on "Over You"
Lambert said on the podcast, "It was one of those really organic moments between not only romantically linked people, but two songwriters met that night. I remember saying to him, like, 'This is kind of your story. Be as vulnerable as you want to. I'll go there with you if you want to.' And he did, and so did I."
Furthermore, she noted, "I felt like that was pretty magical because it was just two songwriters. All the other stuff fell away. This was two really close friends writing a song that night, and it's a very special song to both of us."
