Popular Discount Store Sued by FTC for "Overcharging Customers", "Deceptive Practices"

The popular discount store was hit with a lawsuit from the FTC and 20 states. The practices they allege are happening are crazy.

Everyone has noticed that prices just can't stop going up lately. The cost of living is soaring, and people are looking for any way to lower their grocery bill every week.

And one of the better ways to get that done is by shopping at discount stores. However, that might not be as good as people think.

That's because, as reported by Dexerto, popular discount store Dollar General has been accused of "deceptive pricing practices". They have been handed a lawsuit by the FTC in conjunction with 20 states.

"Dollar General has betrayed the trust of millions of American consumers and imposed significant financial harm on communities and consumers who are already struggling to make their paychecks last," Christopher Mufarrige, the Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, said of the lawsuit.

How are they alleged to have done this, you ask? Well, the FTC have alleged that stores nationwide have been putting the wrong prices on shelves. Many people have felt the frustration when the price on the receipt doesn't match that on the shelf - but that's normally the odd error.

This is where the lawsuit comes from - it alleges that this is an institutional practice for the discount store. The complaint states, "Additionally, since 2022, Dollar General has been the subject of eight class-action lawsuits pertaining to pricing accuracy problems."

There are 20 states in total that are suing the popular discount store - they are the following:

  • Alabama; Arizona; Arkansas; California; Connecticut; Florida; Illinois; Iowa; Kansas; Louisiana; Michigan; Mississippi; Nebraska; New Jersey; North Carolina; Ohio; Oklahoma; Tennessee; Utah; and Wisconsin.

These states joined the FTC over the allegations - and have estimated that "millions of dollars" have been lost because of the alleged practices.

This comes after several different companies over the past few months have been under fire for unsavory prices.

McDonalds were recently hit with a class-action lawsuit alleging that they use AI-powered systems to dynamically change prices. For their part, they denounced the lawsuit, saying that they do not use AI at all.

In any case... Can things start getting cheaper, please?
