Walter Koenig Was Beloved by "Star Trek" Fans From Around the World

Koenig's representatives said he was with his daughter and niece at his North Hollywood home when he died. The statement said his "talent, warmth, and unforgettable performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans around the world."

"Best known for his iconic role as Pavel Chekov in Star Trek: The Original Series, Walter helped inspire audiences with his optimism, humor, and adventurous spirit," it continued. "Beyond Star Trek, his long and distinguished career showcased his versatility as an actor and his genuine love for his craft. His remarkable talent continued to shine in his later years, most recently with his performance in the short film Mr. Fleischmann, for which he received the Platinum Award for Best Actor at the 2026 Independent Shorts Awards — a fitting recognition of a lifetime devoted to his craft.

"Walter's legacy extends far beyond the screen. Through countless convention appearances and interactions with fans, he shared his kindness, wit, and appreciation with everyone fortunate enough to meet him. He understood what Star Trek meant to people and embraced the community that grew around it.

"On behalf of all of us, we extend our deepest condolences to Walter's family, friends, colleagues, and the millions of fans whose lives he touched over the decades.

"Thank you, Walter, for the memories, the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before."

Koenig Was Also Part of Another Sci-Fi Series

Koenig was born in Chicago to a Russian Jewish family. He began acting at Fieldston High School in Fieldston, N.Y. At UCLA, a professor encouraged him to pursue acting. He began studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City. His classmates included Christopher Lloyd, James Caan, and Dabney Coleman.

In addition to playing the Russian-born Chekov, Koenig was also a recurring character in the syndicated sci-fi series Babylon 5. He played Alfred Bester, an evil Psi Cop, in a dozen episodes.

Although reports suggested tension between Koenig and his Star Trek co-star George Takei, the two eventually became close friends. Koenig later served as the best man at Takei's wedding to his husband, Brad Altman.

Koenig is survived by his daughter, actress and writer Danielle. His son, Andrew, died in 2010.
