Clayton Dover, who competes for the South Georgia State College Rodeo Team, suffered a serious spinal injury while competing over the weekend.
His family confirmed that he suffered a "severe rodeo accident" on Saturday, October 17, which shattered his C6 and C7 vertebrae.
College Student Paralyzed Following Devastating Rodeo Accident
Following the accident, Dover underwent a six-and-a-half-hour emergency surgery. He currently faces paralysis in the lower half of his body.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has since been launched to help his family cover mounting medical expenses, including emergency surgery, specialized hospital care and rehabilitation.
According to the fundraiser, the 18-year-old faces a lengthy recovery process that will require ongoing physical therapy, mobility equipment and adaptive gear.
His family will also need to make modifications to their home to accommodate his changing needs.
"Clayton and his family are now facing a long and uncertain road ahead, one filled with immense physical, emotional, and financial challenges," the fundraiser description reads.
"Through it all, Clayton's strength, grit, and determination continue to carry him forward as he begins the hard work of recovery."
Rodeo Community Rallies Around Injured College Student
The GoFundMe fundraiser has already raised approximately $7,000 toward its initial $7,500 goal in just two days, as supporters rally around Dover and his family.
"Support will also help with the travel and living expenses his family continues to face while staying by his side during recovery," the description adds.
"Because many of these needs will continue over time, recurring donations can provide steady help for Clayton's rehabilitation, equipment, and family support in the months ahead."
The South Georgia State College Rodeo Team also addressed the accident on social media, calling on the wider rodeo community to support Dover during his recovery.
"In the rodeo world, we know how to stand together when times get tough. Today, we're asking cowboys, cowgirls, friends, family, and the entire rodeo community to come together and surround Clayton with prayers, strength, and love," the team posted.
One witness who attended the event shared their shock in the comments.
"Me and my family were there in attendance, what a tragic event!".
They added, "We stand with all of you in prayer and ask GOD to cover him and the family with peace above all understanding."
