A popular baby supplement has been recalled after the FDA reported undisclosed alcohol compounds being present within a batch.

What Baby Supplement Has Been Recalled?

The specific baby supplement that faces a recall was produced by Pacific Health Sciences, which is headquartered in Oxnard, California. The specific product that was affected is their Babies' Magic Tea brand Baby Sleep Gripe Water dietary supplement.

  • The package is a 4 fl oz (118mL) amber bottle which is housed in a blue cardboard box.
    • An oral syringe is also included in the box.

Pacific Health Sciences is headquartered in Oxnard, California. The affected product was distributed to Secrets of Tea, who sold it online nationwide - they were sold via retailers including the Secrets of Tea online web store and Amazon.

What is Wrong With the Product?

The product was identified as having several organic alcohol compounds present within it. After FDA testing, the products were estimated to include "8.3% ethanol, 0.35% methanol, and 0.48% isopropanol".

The FDA released a hazard statement regarding the alcohol compounds present within the baby supplement: "Organic alcohols such as ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol are known to impair normal functioning of the central nervous system, while infant ethanol exposure has been linked to long-term developmental consequences."

The statement continues, "Exposure to the amounts recommended on this product's packaging can induce drowsiness, incoordination, behavioral changes, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain... exposure to higher amounts can increase risk of respiratory depression and other serious adverse health consequences."

The FDA has advised consumers to "stop using any product" from the lot, and also to "discard it or return it to place of purchase for a refund".
