Many children of celebrities have struggled with substance abuse and other challenging problems. It's not a new or isolated phenomenon. Having a legendary parent can be a dual blessing and a burden. Getting out from their long shadow may be very daunting. Living up to their established reputation and high expectations adds to the obstacles. The so-called "nepo babies" don't always have a cushy road ahead of them. In his dishy new memoir, One Helluva Ride, actor Michael Douglas, son of the late Kirk Douglas, remembers talking to director Rob Reiner about their adult sons' complex difficulties. An excerpt of the book was in The Los Angeles Times.

Douglas candidly admitted, "We both had sons with serious drug issues and we both, at times, had been at the end of our rope." His son, Cameron, and Reiner's son, Nick, each faced significant challenges.
Their Sons Were Struggling
Cameron, whose mother was Douglas' first wife, Diandra Luker, is 47 years old. He dealt with drug addiction and was incarcerated for almost seven years in federal prison. His life has apparently stabilized since then.
However, Nick Reiner, 33, was charged with the shocking murders of his parents last year in their home. He faces two counts of first-degree murder, plus lying in wait and multiple murders, per Page Six. Reiner is now in prison awaiting trial sometime next year. He has pleaded not guilty.
They Found It Helpful To Compare Their Situations as Dads
Michael Douglas, 82, acknowledged in the book that "It was a heartbreaking confessional for us" but comparing notes as fathers was something that "gave each other some measure of comfort during the hard times." The men were acquainted professionally as well as personally. Rob Reiner helmed a memorable politically-themed movie that starred Douglas alongside Annette Bening, The American President.
Per Fox Digital News, following Reiner's and his wife Michele's deaths, Michael Douglas reflected publicly on his friend, a beloved, widely-respected Hollywood giant. He was on a TV tribute titled Rob Reiner: Scenes From a Life on CBS.
The Basic Instinct star said at that time, "With this terrible tragedy, we're realizing how much pressure he was dealing with in his personal life with his son. I also had a son who had drug issues. And I'm happy to say he's overcome them and he's living a prosperous life. But we talked a lot about that: What you can do as a parent, what you can't do." Douglas also observed, "So knowing with all of that going on behind the scenes, this was a man who always gave you his best."
