School Bus Carrying 28 Student Athletes Crashes After Football Game, Leaving 1 Dead

One person has died and four others were injured after a Subaru collided head-on with a school bus carrying students and staff in Tennessee.

A road traffic accident involving a school bus in Tennessee has tragically left one person dead and four others injured.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 2, when a Subaru collided head-on with a school bus carrying 28 students and staff members.

The bus was reportedly returning to Virginia following a high school football game when the fatal collision occurred.

School Bus Crash Leaves One Dead and Four Injured

Reports state that the driver of the Subaru struck the school bus head-on. The collision killed the motorist at the scene.

Four others suffered injuries in the crash, including three students from Abingdon High School. The collision occurred on Tennessee State Route 91 in Johnson County at around 9:35 p.m.

Emergency crews transported those injured to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment.

"Tragically, one fatality has been reported involving an occupant of the passenger vehicle," a press release from Johnson County Sheriff's Office read.

"A secondary crash also occurred in connection with the initial incident. Minor injuries were reported, with a patient receiving treatment for those injuries."

The sheriff's office added that a "large multi-agency emergency response" followed the crash.

Investigation Launched Into Fatal Collision

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has taken responsibility for the investigation and management of the crash scene.

Authorities will provide further information as the investigation progresses.

"Sheriff Shawn Brown would like to recognize and thank all responding law enforcement officers, fire departments, emergency medical personnel, dispatchers, and other agencies for their coordinated and professional response to a difficult scene," the sheriff's office's statement added.

Authorities have since identified the Subaru driver as 35-year-old Douglas McMillan, who was the only person inside the vehicle.
Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) confirmed that the school bus driver and three student athletes required hospital treatment. None suffered life-threatening or serious injuries.

"We are grateful there were no serious injuries and appreciate the first responders who assisted at the scene," the school district said in a statement.

"Our students and staff were surrounded by people who cared for them, comforted them and helped ensure they made it safely home to their families. The offers of support and assistance from others were immeasurable. "

"We are incredibly thankful to everyone who played a part in that effort."
