U.S. Marine Arrested After Allegedly Robbing and Killing Woman

The U.S. Marine allegedly entered a hotel room with the woman and left alone. He is also alleged to have taken her wallet and backpack.

A U.S. Marine has been arrested after allegedly robbing and killing a woman. As reported by NPR, he was arrested on the Japanese island of Okinawa.

Okinawa prefectural police announced they had arrested a 20-year-old Marine who was stationed at Futenma Air Station. They arrested him in connection with the killing of a 39-year-old local at a hotel in the capital of the island, Naha.

He has also been charged with robbery after allegedly taking her wallet and backpack. The woman's body was found in her hotel room, with preliminary reports identifying that she had been strangled.

Police identified the suspect through surveillance footage. It showed the Marine, who has not been identified, as coming into the hotel with the woman and leaving alone.

However, the U.S. Marine Corps revealed in a statement that the suspect is assigned to the III Marine Expeditionary Force but did not give any further details as to his identity.

Authorities Commented on the Marine Being Arrested

The governor of Okinawa, Genta Koja, released a statement about the incident. "The case deals a major shock and adds fear to the Okinawans who have already been forced to live next to U.S. bases," he said. "It is absolutely unforgivable and we are outraged."

This comes after residents have raised concerns about the sheer number of U.S. forces stationed in the region. Residents have complained about noise pollution as well as crime being more prevalent in the area since a bilateral agreement was signed allowing U.S. troops to be stationed in the country.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also released a statement about the incident. On social media, she wrote, "The occurrence of the heinous crime is extremely regrettable. She also wrote that her government had "strongly protested" to the U.S. about what had happened.

The US Marine Corps also released a statement about the incident, writing, "The Marine Corps takes these allegations very seriously and expects every Marine to adhere to the highest standards of behavior."

This is a truly horrible situation, and we hope that justice is found for the woman following what happened.
