If you loved Yellowstone, then you may be following the exploits of one of its fan favorite characters, Kayce Dutton, on Marshals. The spinoff stars Luke Grimes a a dedicated crime fighter in Montana. However, his personal life has undergone a big upheaval. Kayce's beloved wife and the mother of his son, Monica, tragically passed away last season. Fans of Yellowstone probably were not thrilled to have actress Kelsey Asbille written out of the plot. The thinking seems to have been that Kayce would have more dramatic depth as a widower and a single dad. So where does the character from here as season 2 is about to unfold? Will he find love and laughter again with a new woman? Luke Grimes had a few insights and hints about that recently.

The New Season of 'Marshals' Starts on Sunday, October 4
Grimes dished about what fans can anticipate without giving away too much. He shared with Entertainment Weekly, "It's more of the same things that I enjoyed about season 1. We're going a little bit more into some backstory, which we started to do in season 1 anyway. You know so much about Kayce already, but I feel like the other characters are starting to catch up as far as their relationship with the audience. But as far as like the tone, the pace, it's a lot of the same things that I liked about the first season."
Grimes also mentioned that Kayce, who seems pretty intense, will be mingling socially a bit more at the local watering hole. "He's hanging out with everybody a little more. He's going to the bar a little more." With his son, Tate, getting older, he "starts to get a glimpse of his future and what he's seeing seems very lonely. He's gonna have to start seeking community somewhere. He starts to try to invest in his relationships with his teammates, and I think it gets him out of his shell in a good way."
Grimes Doesn't Want Kayce's Storyline To Be Too Dismal
Kayce Dutton has experienced many losses in his life, including his dad, who was memorably played by Kevin Costner. That said, Luke Grimes wants to keep him out of the permanent doldrums. He quipped to the outlet, "Wouldn't you think that he's just broken at this point. Everything that could have gone wrong for this guy goes wrong. One of my fears of season 2 is: Is it gonna be so much that people are sick of it? I don't want him to be Debbie Downer."
However, he has gritty resilience in his favor. It runs in the Dutton family. "That's what's fun about it: This guy can go through literally everything and still get back up. That's what I think is really attractive about the character."
How About a New Romance?
Will Kayce be wooing anybody? Grimes replied, "Yeah, I think so — obviously slowly and cautiously." In fact, he and showrunner Spencer Hudnut have actually mulled it over. "Spencer [Hudnut] and I have talked about: How we do that in the way that the audience allows it and doesn't get upset by it. Some time has passed, and I think we have to put Kayce in some situations where you don't blame him for wanting to open up that way."
Whatever direction the character's life takes next, Luke Grimes is deeply invested in Kayce's destiny. "It starts to kind of feel like a real person. It's very confusing sometimes. He's been in my life for a very long time. I want him to be happy."
