Tributes have been coming thick and fast for Dolly Parton since she died on Tuesday, August 25. The beloved country music star and philanthropist touched the lives of so many people. They are eager to show their affection and respect for her in myriad ways. When he learned of Parton's unexpected passing, President Donald Trump ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff for one week to acknowledge her death. However, one local official has announced that his community will apparently not be doing so.

Mayor Ken Adams of Olive Branch, Mississippi, wrote a long social media post to explain why he will not be complying. He got lots of very angry pushback from irate citizens.
How Mayor Adams Described His Decision About Not Lowering the Flag
In a
Facebook post, Mayor Ken Adams readily agreed that Dolly Parton was "a great person." He understands that she was loved for her immense generosity and talent. But he also shared his "concern" regarding lowering the flag for her.Adams wrote in part, "I believe lowering the American flag to half-staff should mean something very significant. In my opinion, it should be reserved for our military heroes, fallen first responders, presidents and other major national leaders, or events that have had a tremendous impact on our country. If we lower the flag every time a well-known or beloved person passes away, I believe we eventually lessen the meaning of the gesture."
Adams also noted that local government, in his opinion, should have a say in this and other matters. "I believe a mayor should have the ability to make a decision for his or her city. I also don't believe residents elected me to be a 'salute and execute' Mayor but to lead with conviction."
He added, "This isn't about disrespecting Dolly Parton. It isn't about politics. And it certainly isn't about saying she wasn't a great American. It's simply my belief that the American flag at half-staff is one of the highest honors we can give, and I believe that honor should be reserved for truly extraordinary circumstances."
People Clearly Did Not Go Along With the Mayor
Hardly anyone who commented on Adams' stance on this topic saw it his way. Quite the opposite. Many were incensed that Dolly Parton would not be accorded this honor. They feel it's completely wrong to deny it to her.

"She did more for children than any politician ever has. That should raise her status in your eyes from 'just a celebrity'"
"When you said 'it's simply my belief.' I guess you said it all. Doesn't matter to you what the President, the Governor or your residents believe. And 'reserved for people who made a tremendous impact?' Well...she was probably the most unifying figure of the past 40 years; and she donated 325 million books to kids. Sounds like an impact. What have you done?"
"Respectfully disagree. You have turned something simple, sweet and respectful that nobody would have been taking about, into something ALL about YOU. And then say it's not political?...."
"Flags were lowered to half staff when Bob Hope died. So this action is not unique for Dolly. It's a sign of respect for someone who represents the best of America."
