For fans of pistachio butter, this could be serious. The FDA has just updated its classification of an ongoing recall of a popular brand of pistachio butter. At the time of the original recall, the butter was branded as a Class II.
A Class II means the product "may cause temporary or medically reversible health problems". However, "serious consequences are unlikely".
However, the recall has now been branded as a Class I risk - this means that the pistachio nut butter "could cause serious illness or death".

What Pistachio Butter Faces a Recall?
Per the original recall notice, the 6.7oz (190g) jars of bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter are affected. They have been recalled because there is a risk of salmonella contamination within the product. Salmonella is especially deadly to children and the elderly, and anyone who is immunocompromised.
The product was found to have possibly harbored salmonella due to a routine inspection from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
The bettergoods product was originally produced in Italy by Gustibus Alimentari Srl, before being imported by Botticelli.
The recalled jars have the UPC code of 194346207961, the lot code of LB028ACP04, and an expiration date of January 28, 2027 printed on the jar. The estimated number of jars that are affected is 16,200.
The jars themselves have a bright pink label, which reads the "bettergoods" branding. The jar's label says, "CRAFTED ARTISANALLY | PISTACHIO NUT BUTTER | MADE IN ITALY".
The product was sold exclusively at Walmart stores, online and in-store. They were sold in the following states:
- Alabama; Alaska; Arizona; Colorado; Florida; Georgia; Idaho; Kansas; Mississippi; Missouri; Montana; Nebraska; Nevada; New Mexico; Oregon; South Dakota; Tennessee; Washington; and Wyoming.
What Should I Do if My Product is Affected?
People who have purchased the affected bettergoods pistachio nut butter have been advised to not consume the product. Further, they should return it to their place of purchase for a full refund.
