Brazilian freesurfer Victor Bernardo and his wife have miraculously survived a serious car crash "that easily could have been fatal".

Bernardo, 28, and his wife, Johnni Bufkin Bernardo, were involved in the crash in Southern California on August 16.
Those close to the couple described the accident as "very serious," with emergency crews airlifting Victor to the hospital while an ambulance transported Johnni for treatment.

Surfing filmmaker Logan Dulien shared an update on the couple's condition on Instagram following the accident.
Dulien said Victor and Johnni both remained in the hospital. Victor was preparing to undergo surgery, while medical staff were "doing their best" to improve Johnni's condition.
"It's going to be a very long and expensive road to recovery but I'm confident the surf community will rally together to support and uplift them on the challenging journey ahead," Dulien wrote.
"For now just put out positive thoughts , love , prayers and healing energy for them both."
A GoFundMe fundraiser has since been launched for the couple, raising more than $50,000 toward a $500,000 target.
Those close to Victor and Johnni have kept specific details surrounding the crash private, but organizers have shared updates about the difficult recovery journey ahead.

According to the fundraiser, Victor and Johnni could remain unable to work for between six months and a year as they recover from their injuries.
Organizers also expect the couple to require "additional surgeries" over the coming months.
"We are expecting an immense amount of procedures, medications and rehabilitation for the foreseeable future," the description reads.
Donations will help the couple cover mounting expenses throughout their recovery, including rent, car payments, food and medical procedures.
"Their family, friends, and the surf community have all come together to care for them and none of it has gone unnoticed," organizers added.
"We hope to remove as much of the financial burden as possible as they navigate this life-changing journey to recovery."
Victor has built a reputation in surfing away from the sport's traditional competitive pathway, establishing himself as a standout freesurfer known for his creative approach in the water.
Last month, organizers announced Bernardo as one of the surfers invited to compete in the 2026 Four Seasons Maldives Surfing Champions Trophy.
