The sister of late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton has died, shortly after it emerged that she was facing a "life-threatening medical crisis".

The Burton family announced that Connie Burton died on Wednesday, August 19.
According to a statement shared by the family, Connie passed away at 7:50 p.m. while "surrounded by her closest living loved ones."
Her death comes four decades after Cliff tragically died at the age of 24 in 1986.

In an emotional statement announcing her death, the Burton family said Connie "looked beautiful as she lay in rest taking her final breaths."
"The room was heavy with the spirit of her brother Cliff, her mother Jan, her brother Scott, and her father Ray."
Following Cliff's death in 1986, Connie devoted much of her life to preserving and celebrating her younger brother's legacy.
She shared personal memories and stories about the legendary Metallica bassist as part of the 90-minute documentary The Salvation Kingdom.
"Connie Burton loved everyone that shared with her how Cliff impacted their life," the statement added. "She took the time to write to everyone that shared a story with her, just as Jan and Ray did."
The family's announcement concluded with the heartfelt message: "We know Cliff is excited to hug his big sister once again."
Connie is survived by her daughter, Nicole Mercedes Brereton, and her partner of 24 years, Harold Shannon.
Connie Burton Faced Serious Health Battle Before Death
Details surrounding Connie's health struggles had emerged less than two months before her death.
A GoFundMe fundraiser created on June 26 revealed that she was suffering from "severe decay in her skull".
According to the fundraiser, the decay had begun in her teeth before spreading to her sinuses, leaving her in need of urgent medical treatment.
"Doctors have warned that if the decay breaks through, it could be fatal," the fundraiser description read. "The surgery she needs is urgent, and she must put down a significant amount apart from what insurance will cover."
Organizers appealed for donations to help cover Connie's medical expenses, expressing hope that treatment would allow her to recover and "continue her work here on earth".
The fundraiser ultimately collected just over $13,000 toward its $15,000 target.
Following news of her death, tributes poured in across social media from those who remembered Connie and her dedication to keeping her brother's memory alive.
"May she rest in peace," one user wrote. "I still have the letter she sent me after Cliffs passing when I wrote to the family. They are all together now."
Another added, "The Burtons are reunited."
The Burton family said a private funeral service for Connie will take place at a later date.
