Bills Support Ed Oliver After NFL Star's Son Dies
The Bills publicly acknowledged the heartbreaking news on Saturday, offering their condolences and support to Oliver and his family.
"On behalf of the entire Buffalo Bills organization, we want to publicly express our condolences to Ed Oliver and his family on the devastating loss of his son," Bills general manager Brandon Beane said.
"It's an unthinkable tragedy for any parent. We will continue to support Ed and his family as we all grieve this tragic loss."
Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a life-in-danger call on June 28.
When deputies arrived at the residence, they learned that the boy's parents had found him unresponsive in the home's swimming pool.
Emergency responders rushed the two-year-old to a Houston hospital for treatment, but medical personnel pronounced him dead at around 7:18 p.m.
Ed Oliver Continued Training Camp With Buffalo Bills
Oliver has continued participating in team activities throughout the Bills' training camp in the weeks since the tragedy.
The organization and Oliver's family remained in communication before jointly deciding to publicly acknowledge what had happened to his son.
Oliver did not travel with Buffalo for its preseason matchup against the Cleveland Browns as he continues to recover from a minor injury.
However, the Bills had already decided to keep the majority of their veteran starters out of the preseason contest.
Buffalo selected Oliver with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, and the defensive tackle has spent his entire professional career with the franchise.
Before reaching the NFL, Oliver established himself as one of the country's most highly regarded recruits.
The 28-year-old played college football at the University of Houston from 2016 to 2018 after receiving offers from several major programs, including Alabama, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M.
He has since become a key part of Buffalo's defensive front during his seven seasons with the organization.
Oliver is also a father to a daughter, Ava.
