Greg Medina, 48, was hanging out poolside in a jacuzzi when two young adults ambushed him, kicked him in the head and ran off with his iPhone.
Per the New York Post, Medina recently went back to school and was listening to a class lecture via wireless headphones when the attack occurred on Friday at the Creekside Village apartments.
"I was listening to the class in earbuds and normally I don't do that. But this day I decided to, and felt a sharp kick behind my head," Medina told The California Post.
The unprovoked attack was captured on surveillance.
One suspect punted Medina in the back of the head while the other snatched his phone, which was sitting on the concrete.
Medina accuses the suspects of laughing during the attack.
"They thought it was funny to do this to me."
Medina was later admitted into a hospital with a concussion. The California father was later diagnosed with "post-concussion syndrome."
"This was a pure act of violence," Medina said. "A pure act of evil."
Although he is still reeling from the attack and loss of his phone, Medina is thankful that the damage done was relatively minimal.
"I could have lost consciousness. I could have been hurt a lot worse and drowned," he said.
Medina, a full-time chef, works for Lutheran Social Services, where he prepares meals for homeless individuals. The California chef typically serves 70 to 75 homeless individuals during his eight-hour shifts, he told the outlet.
San Bernardino police are investigating and told The Post the suspects remain at large.
California Family Attacked at Hawaii Resort
Medina is not the only victim of a poolside ambush.
Seven visitors from California were brutalized by a mob during their stay at a luxury resort in West Maui, resulting in six of them receiving medical treatment.
The July 17 incident occurred around 10 p.m. at Kaanapali Alii resort in Lahaina, where Maui police responded to reports of a disorderly gathering involving about 30 people, Hawaii News Now reported.
One of the family's relatives required 13 stitches after being hit in the head with a chair.
